Duke of Edinburgh Award

What is the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award?

Think of it as an adventure, a chance to try new things, and a way to prove to yourself (and the world) what you are capable of. The DofE Award is all about:

  • Having fun
  • Learning new skills
  • Helping others
  • Exploring the great outdoors

It is recognised across the world, respected by employers, and a brilliant way to stand out on university and job applications. Best of all? Anyone can do it. No matter what your interests, background, or ability—you set your own challenges, push your own limits, and celebrate your own achievements.  Did you know last year over 100 students received a DofE award!

Why do the DofE?

  • Build confidence and resilience
  • Make a difference in your community
  • Discover new hobbies and passions
  • Make friends and unforgettable memories
  • Gain skills for life and your future career

After your DofE, you’ll feel ready to take on anything life throws at you.

The Three Award Levels

At SPW, you can complete DofE at Bronze, Silver, or Gold level depending on your year group.

Bronze Award (Year 9)

  • 4 sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition
  • Expedition = 2 days, 1 night away from home (last time we went to the South Downs in Kent)

Silver Award (Y10)

  • Same 4 sections as Bronze, but longer and more challenging Expedition = 3 days, 2 nights – more teamwork, more adventure!
  • You will have two expeditions, a practice one and one on which you are assessed.

Gold Award (Year 12) – this course runs if we get enough sign up.

5 sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition + Residential

  • Expedition = 4 days, 3 nights
  • Residential = join a group of new people for a week-long experience (e.g. sailing, conservation, or a creative project).

How it works at SPW

  • You choose what to do for Volunteering, Physical, and Skills (we’ll guide you along the way with a logbook).
  • We’ll train you for the Expedition with our partners at the Urban Adventure Base.
  • Regular school sessions (during or after school) give you all the support you need.
