Our Y12 students recently took part in an inspiring and thought provoking visit to the V&A East Storehouse, where they worked closely with Debate Mate mentors and museum staff across an engaging and interactive day.

The session gave students the opportunity to explore a wide range of fascinating objects from the museum’s collection while developing their debating skills. Using these artefacts as a starting point, students were encouraged to think critically about how evidence, perspective and historical context can shape an argument. This approach allowed them to connect academic thinking with real world issues in a meaningful way.

Throughout the day, Debate Mate mentors supported students in building practical techniques for effective communication.

They focused on how to structure arguments clearly, listen carefully to opposing viewpoints and respond in a thoughtful and respectful manner. They were encouraged to challenge ideas while maintaining open mindedness, developing confidence in expressing their views.

Then the young learners drew on everything they had learned during the workshops to present thoughtful, well structured arguments in the final debate. The discussion explored whether looted items held in museum collections should be returned to their countries of origin.

We were especially proud that one of our Year 12 students led the team that won the debate, demonstrating confidence, clarity of thought and strong leadership. It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved, combining history, critical thinking and public speaking in a memorable way.

This experience reflects our school value of Integrity, as students showed respect, honesty and responsibility when engaging with complex issues and differing perspectives.
