Lighting Up Creativity with River of Light Project

At St Paul’s Way Primary School, we are always looking for exciting ways to bring learning to life, encourage creativity and connect our pupils with the world around them. Our latest art project, River of Light, has given children the opportunity to create something special while celebrating our local environment and community.

As part of the project, our pupils have been designing and making their own lanterns, using their imagination to transform materials into unique works of art. With support throughout the creative process, the children have explored different ideas, developed practical skills and taken pride in bringing their designs to life. Their creations will become real illuminated lanterns, ready to glow during a special evening procession.

The next stage of the project will see the children walk along the river near sunset, carrying their lanterns and watching them glow as the daylight fades. This promises to be a memorable experience, allowing pupils to see their hard work transformed into a beautiful display of light, colour and creativity.

River of Light, including the Light up the Lea initiative, brings together schools, families and community groups to celebrate East London’s waterways, wildlife and local identity. Through creative workshops and an evening lantern parade, the project encourages children to appreciate the natural spaces around them and understand the importance of caring for our environment.

For our pupils, this project is about more than creating artwork. It is an opportunity to work creatively, share an experience with others and build a stronger connection with the community they are part of.

We are proud of the imagination, enthusiasm and care our children have shown throughout the project. At St Paul’s Way Primary, we believe that meaningful experiences help children grow in confidence, discover their talents and recognise the value of working together.

River of Light reflects our school value of Community, celebrating how creativity can bring people together and create shared experiences that shine far beyond the classroom.
