At St Paul’s Way Primary, we recently dedicated a full day to celebrating Black History Month, giving our pupils the opportunity to explore inspiring stories, discover important historical figures and recognise the achievements and contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout history.
Throughout the day, children took part in engaging workshops that combined creativity with meaningful learning. One of the activities involved creating portraits inspired by the style of John Blanke, a Black trumpeter who served at the Tudor royal court. Through this artistic experience, pupils explored historical representation while developing their own creative skills and learning about an important figure from Britain’s past.
Alongside their artwork, pupils discovered the stories of famous Black individuals who have made a difference in society. From those who challenged injustice to those who achieved remarkable success in their chosen fields, the children explored how determination, courage and ambition have helped shape history and inspire future generations.
The workshops also highlighted the growth and achievements of Black individuals and the significant movements that have helped bring about social change. These discussions encouraged pupils to reflect on equality, representation and the importance of recognising the experiences and contributions of people from different backgrounds.
At St Paul’s Way Primary, we believe that learning about diverse histories helps children develop a broader understanding of the world. By combining art, discussion and historical discovery, the day provided opportunities for pupils to ask questions, share ideas and celebrate the achievements of others.
We are proud of the enthusiasm and curiosity our pupils demonstrated throughout the workshops. Experiences like these help us create an inclusive learning environment where every child can feel valued, develop confidence and understand the importance of respecting different perspectives.
Our Black History Month celebration reflects our school value of Aspiration, encouraging pupils to learn from inspiring individuals, recognise what can be achieved through determination and believe in their own potential to make a positive difference in the world.
