On Thursday 9th of June 2016 SPWT had the pleasure of hosting the launch of a new educational app, ‘Helimed’, by London’s Air Ambulance.
London’s Air Ambulance is partnering with SPWT and other schools to roll out the app across the capital and is already being used in Tower Hamlets and Newham.
Our students participated in the development process of the application and during the event everyone had a chance to play, discover and enjoy the app’s final version.
Students from both Trust and Foundation Primary School, were thrilled to witness the Air Ambulance’s helicopter landing on our astroturf!
After the exciting event, everyone had a chance to speak to the ambulance crew and pilots at a celebratory event that we will all definitely remember.
Executive Headteacher, Grahame Price, said:
“St Paul’s Way Trust School is delighted to host the official launch of this exciting and very relevant app. We fully support the drive to encourage young people to gain an interest, and pursue a successful career, in STEM areas.
As London's Faraday Science School, initiatives like this, which complement our high quality science offer, ensure that students are inspired by science and decide to pursue it further by choosing Triple Science GCSEs, STEM A levels and STEM based degrees. This App shows science at its finest, it is focussed on the science and technology that saves lives, it is a great educational resource and deserves to be used widely in schools.”
Enthusiastic SPWT students said after the event:
"Developing the app was really interesting as we got to see our feedback actually improving each version."
"I discovered so much more about the people involved in the London Air Ambulance, I would love to be a paramedic one day."
"I always wanted to be a Pilot, but I didn't know they used so many different subjects day to day. In the app the pilot used map reading skills just like we had been taught in geography and calculations like the ones we use in Science. It really brought our subjects to life."
We are very grateful to London’s Air Ambulance for this great learning opportunity for our students and for the exciting event enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.
